In conjunction with its exhibits, Decatur House holds annual contests for students of varying ages, both nationally and locally. Past contests have included a "buried history" project based on archaeology in everyday life, an art contest asking students to depict the "heroes" in their own lives, and a photography contest for images of Lafayette Square.
