Parties and
Politics at Decatur House
Since its construction by naval hero Stephen Decatur
in
1818, Decatur House has been at the center of the
social and political life of the capital. During the
Andrew Jackson administration, the resignation of the
entire cabinet over the "Peggy Eaton Affair" may have
been sparked when Secretary of State Van Buren asked
the controversial Mrs. Eaton to dance in the Decatur
House ballroom. In the twentieth century, Decatur
House owner Marie Beale entertained lavishly for the
diplomatic corp and prominent politicians. Legend has
it that Mrs. Beale banished the young Senator John F.
Kennedy to a table near the service stair because she was
unhappy with his choice of attire. From its gas-lit
entrance on Lafayette Square to the its hidden service
spaces, learn more about the almost two centuries of
parties and politics as you tour the elegant Decatur
House.
Scandal and
Intrigue on Lafayette Square
Decatur House was the first private home built on
Lafayette Square and, by the mid-19th century, the
Square was one of the most exclusive residential
neighborhoods in Washington. With so many
prominent political figures, government officials,
artists, diplomats, and business owners living in such
close proximity to one another and to the White
House, a number of shocking dramas have played out
on the Square. Explore Madison and Jackson Places on
this walking tour and learn how assassination attempts,
crimes of passion, espionage, sensational lawsuits, and
even prairie dogs have been a part of the scandalous
history of Lafayette Square.
